Liposuction in Chicago

One of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in all of Chicago, liposuction, also known as "suction-assisted lipectomy," is designed to eliminate or recontour deposits of fatty tissue that just don't respond to a reasonable course of diet and/or exercise. The best candidates for liposuction have relatively isolated problem areas – often the abdomen, flanks, hip rolls, inner/outer thighs and/or anterior neck – and good quality overlying skin.

Liposuction is not nearly as effective for global obesity, cellulite, or in patients with stretch marks or loose, poor skin quality. These situations are better treated by strategic excision of skin and fatty tissue, as in abdominoplasty.

Your Liposuction Procedure

Dr. Paul Steinwald usually performs liposuction for Chicago area men and women under light general anesthesia, with the use of "tumescent fluid" infiltrated into the areas to be treated, which helps to anesthetize the areas and limit bleeding. Larger areas may be treated with power-assisted liposuction, which limits trauma to the tissues, and ultimately makes large-area liposuction easier for the surgeon.

One of the ancillary facilities at which Dr. Steinwald retains privileges, the HealthSouth Surgical Center of Hawthorne (in Libertyville near Routes 60 and 21) has the equipment required for Chicago ultrasonic liposuction, which theoretically improves skin retraction post-operatively, especially in areas that may have scarring from previous liposuction or in the thicker fatty tissue of the male chest, for example.

A smoother body contouring result is greatly facilitated by wearing specialized compression garments for several weeks (which are provided). Unless large amounts of fat are to be removed (over 4 liters), liposuction is usually performed as an outpatient procedure.
