Most young men undergo subtle breast changes as they pass through puberty – often characterized by a temporary lumpiness behind the nipple. In certain men, however, these changes persist, or the chest area gradually develops an undesirable "feminized" appearance, known as "gynecomastia." Chicago men can see their breasts take on an enlarged appearance due to nipple enlargement, subareolar (behind the nipple) masses, general fattiness and/or excessive skin. Gynecomastia can be a significant source of self-consciousness or even embarrassment, especially at the gym or on the beach, but the good news is that male breast reduction from Dr. Steinwald can achieve great results with standard plastic surgery methods.

In cases where hormonal abnormalities (usually due to relative estrogen excess), medical issues (testicular masses, thyroid imbalance or renal issues), or exogenous agents (medications, steroids, excessive marijuana use) have been ruled out by your primary care physician as the source for an enlarged, feminine chest appearance, plastic surgery techniques can be applied to create a more masculine look to the chest. If there truly is a firm fullness or mass effect behind the nipple, a formal biopsy may be covered by insurance (and usually is performed by a general surgeon) to rule out a malignant process (as men can get breast cancer too).

Otherwise, surgery for gynecomastia is usually considered a cosmetic procedure, whether it be ultrasound-assisted liposuction in Chicago and/or direct excision of skin, fat and breast tissue. These procedures are usually performed on an outpatient basis under light general anesthesia.
