Breast Lift in Chicago
A breast lift helps Chicago area women recapture the breast shape and fullness of their youth, especially after pregnancy and breastfeeding, weight loss, or progressive aging. The effect of gravity on women's breasts over time can be striking, as supportive structures become attenuated or stretched, and the skin itself loses its elasticity. The result is usually drooping (or "ptosis") of the breast, as well as loss of "superior pole fullness," both of which are often compounded by pregnancy and nursing, the aftereffects of which are termed "post-partum involution."
Paul M. Steinwald, M.D. is one of the few plastic surgeons in Chicago who is double-board certified in both plastic and general surgery. Read On
Many women who visit us for breast lift surgery also learn that they can achieve a more flattering breast size and shape by combining it with Chicago breast augmentation with saline or silicone gel breast implants in a single procedure. Other women with uncomfortably large breasts combine a breast lift and breast reduction. Dr. Paul Steinwald, a board-certified plastic surgeon, will take the time to review your goals carefully and recommend the procedures he believes are most beneficial.

More About Breast Lift Surgery
There are several grades of breast ptosis, which are usually defined by nipple position relative to the breast mound and/or inframammary fold. The continuum of these grades of ptosis may be treated by a variety of progressively-involved procedures:
- Mild ptosis (nipple at or above the breast fold) often can be treated with either breast augmentation alone or a peri-areolar (donut) breast lift to effectively lift the nipple and restore fullness.
- Moderate ptosis (nipple at or below the breast fold) may require more extensive incisions, although this often can be limited to scars around the nipple usually with a vertical component below the nipple.
- Severe ptosis (nipples well below the inframammary fold or pointing downward) usually requires more extensive incisions placed in an "anchor" or "upside-down T" pattern around and below the nipple, as well as along the breast fold, to significantly lift the nipple and adequately manage an excess of skin in the vertical and horizontal dimensions.
In Illinois, most breast lifts can be performed as an outpatient under IV "twilight" sedation, if not lighter general anesthesia. After recovery is complete, most women who choose to have a mastopexy wish they had their procedure earlier, and enjoy having regained a more youthful breast shape and position.
