Chicago Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Since people look at your eyes when they talk to you, aging in this area can have the most detrimental effect on your appearance and image. As people age, the eyelid skin and underlying structures may become more inelastic or attenuated, leading to redundant folds of skin, drooping of the upper or lower eyelids, or prominent fat pads below the eyes.

Chicago eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) from board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Steinwald addresses these areas of excess skin, bulges, or puffiness around the eyelids that can make you look older, tired, angry or sad. Rejuvenation of the eyelid region therefore often provides the most dramatic improvement in your appearance, which is why this is the first facial cosmetic surgery a majority of our Chicago-area patients interested in facial rejuvenation choose to undergo.

More about Blepharoplasty in Chicago

Cosmetic concerns around the eye are most often addressed via an upper and/or lower eyelid lift. During this procedure, Dr. Steinwald trims away excess skin or bulging fat, with the goal of eliminating heavy-looking lids and wrinkles, leaving the patient with a "refreshed" look. Structural drooping of the upper lids or laxity of the lower lids often can be addressed with the same procedure. (Finer peri-wrinkles or "crow's feet" are not significantly improved by this procedure, but do respond well to treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic or laser resurfacing). In cases where the forehead skin has begun to sag, Dr. Steinwald may recommend a brow lift in addition to or instead of upper eyelid surgery.

An eyelid lift can be performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia with light IV sedation, or deeper "twilight" anesthesia under the supervision of an anesthesiologist. While post-operative bruising may persist for a week or more, it can be minimized with the use of the herbal supplement Arnica Montana (which we provide), and actual pain/downtime following blepharoplasty is fairly minimal.

If you are a considering undergoing a blepharoplasty or eyelid lift in northern Illinois, you will probably agree with most of the Lake Forest Plastic Surgery patients who have gone before you that this is a relatively simple, satisfying procedure that provides just about the most "bang for the buck" that cosmetic surgery can offer.
