Breast augmentation, or "augmentation mammaplasty" is one of the most commonly performed procedures in the United States, and is a popular procedure in our Chicago-area practice. These techniques can be applied to a variety of problems to enhance the size and shape of a woman's breasts. These issues may include:
- congenital hypomastia (small or disproportionate breasts)
- breast asymmetry
- mild ptosis (drooping)
- loss of fullness following pregnancy and breast-feeding ("post-partum involution")
Breast augmentation is usually performed as an outpatient procedure under IV sedation or general anesthesia. We most frequently recommend the use of smooth, round, saline-filled implants placed in the sub-muscular position, via either an inframammary or peri-areolar incision, but these recommendations may vary according to a woman's individual issues and desires. The ultimate goal is to create a breast that looks and feels as natural as possible.
