BOTOX® Cosmetic in Chicago

BOTOX® Cosmetic is the Chicago area's most commonly performed outpatient cosmetic treatment. When precisely injected into facial muscles to diminish wrinkles, it is not only very safe but also very effective. This injectable, which contains laboratory-purified Botulinum Type A, works by blocking the nerve impulses to small facial muscles that are responsible for the overlying facial wrinkles, which are generally oriented perpendicularly to the direction of the muscle action. Because the normal activity of these underlying muscles accentuates the wrinkles, the injection of BOTOX Cosmetic temporarily abolishes this muscle activity, and therefore diminishes the overlying wrinkles.

While the administration of BOTOX Cosmetic sounds (and is) quite simple, it is important for discerning patients who want the most precise and long-lasting effect to have it administered by qualified practitioners. While BOTOX can be offered by almost any medical office, by and large only plastic surgeons like Dr. Steinwald have the intimate knowledge of the facial anatomy (having seen the "inside" or underside of a forehead during many brow lifts and/or craniofacial procedures while training) to inject this agent with the precision required to get the best possible results. For these reasons, Dr. Steinwald personally injects all BOTOX Cosmetic; Chicago area patients should expect or accept no less.

After applying "pre-icing" for comfort, and an alcohol swab for sterility, BOTOX is strategically injected into the facial muscles in small therapeutic doses. It can be used to treat the "frown lines" of the mid-forehead between the eyebrows and over the upper nose ("bunny lines"), prominent transverse brow wrinkles (although the desirable/youthful lateral-third flare of the eyebrow is usually preserved), and the "crow's feet" around the eyes. BOTOX Cosmetic typically takes effect after several days and has a maximum effect at about two weeks, after which the effect gradually fades over 3-4 months. As per our extensive experience here with patients from across Illinois, BOTOX® Cosmetic injections should have virtually no complications/side effects, and adverse reactions are exceedingly rare.

This course reinforced and updated current upper brow/forehead and periorbital techniques, and introduced the concept of BOTOX Cosmetic in the lower face to potentially fill out lip lines, elevate down-turned corners of the mouth, and even help correct a drooping nasal tip or a "gummy" smile. Techniques of injecting into the neck area to correct faint transverse lines or more prominent vertical bands were also covered.
